Connected Accounts with Cutover Migration

$

I will be doing a migration in about two weeks time for about 45 users.  Most are in house but some are remote workers.  Biggest problem I'm going to face is that their only pipe is a single T1.  I also found a user with over 11GB of email.

I was thinking of setting up enabled accounts just to get all new mail to come over, but currently their MX records are pointed at their old POP3 service.  I won't be changing those until the day of migration.  Since it is POP3 I know it won't pull over their current folder hiearchy for their Inbox (or will it?).  Also, will this also take the email off the existing POP3 server so they wont' see it on their old account?

At least this could give me a head start.

Any ideas?

On-Premise > Cloud mailbox moves now fail with mrsproxy error

Hi all,

So, quickly, my setup - I've a co-existance setup, on prem 2007 environment, and a hybrid server with the CAS, HT and MBX roles installed. ADFS, and DirSync. Everything comes through the hybrid, no MX record change. All my hybrid server data comes through a 2010 TMG configured with rules for RPC, AutoDis, EWS, OWA, ECP and all the rest. I've got all the usual setup flood mitigation for the Microsoft servers for my region, etc.

Ok, so, my problem is with mailbox moves from my Exchange environment to the cloud, it is infuriating and typically Microsoft to give an absolutely useless error message.

I've been moving mailboxes from my on-prem environment for a few weeks now, in batches as we test the procedure and environment. All 'was' well. I'm now at the stage where I'm ramping up my moves (nothing major, only about 20 mailboxes).

I've moved up about 50 so far, with some annoying issues, but recently, none, all was fine.

I moved a batch this week, all but one moved, it had corrupt items - I set the command (as I've done for this type of error before) [Set-MoveRequest -Identity "<smtp address of mover>" -BadItemLimit 100] - and expected all to be well. Now, I get the below error when moving this account, and it's not just this person, it's ALL moves now.
The call to 'https://<hybrid server FQDN>/EWS/mrsproxy.svc' failed. Error details: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Negotiate'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Negotiate,NTLM,Basic realm="<hybrid server FQDN>"'. --> The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized..

...let me be clear, I've read these ^ and I wouldn't be posting in here if I hadn't have read everything I could find on Google.

I ran the RemoteConnectivityAnalyzer and - no issues found in AutoDisc.
I checked the TMG config, no changes, and the test for the rule completes.

I have a concern that this problem suddenly appeared when all was well two days ago. I'm willing to accept that it could be that my TMG is blocking this all of a sudden or equally that our external firewall company has blocked something between my hybrid server and the internet due to traffic spikes. Infact I'm willing to listen to anything as a reason, but what I need is way to definitively prove the issue.
If there was a way to do a two-way test using the same procedure the move request is using with a way to show the failure that would help hugely.

I've tried the test that some have mentioned [Test-MigrationServerAvailability -Exchange -ExchangeServer <exchange server FQDN> -Credentials $PSCredentials -RPCProxyServer <hybrid server FQDN> -Authentication NTLM, Basic -Verbose] and the hybrid server PS (on which I have installed all the additions that the O365 deployment guide directs) tells me:
The "Verbose" parameter can't be used on the "Test-MigrationServerAvailability"
cmdlet because it isn't present in the role definition for the current user. Check the management roles assigned to you, and try again.

   ability], CmdletAccessDeniedException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : E97AEE76,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Migration
   .TestMigrationServerAvailability

I'm using the default admin details that are created in the O365 tenant and I'm a Exchage Administrator of my environment, logged on with that account. So the paramete -verbose I need to use isn't used with this command. How useful is this command then?!

As you probably can tell, this is frustrating me hugely. Especially as one second I'm moving mailboxes fine, and now suddenly everything has stopped. Event Viewer tells me nothing, I don't understand how m$ can expect IT professionals to work when we can't even find out what the problem IS much less find support to fix it.

If anyone out there can enlighten me here, I'd appreciate any and all help.

Thanks in advance

Office 365 Pilot Testing

Hi,

We have an Exchange 2003 on premises email system currently. We need to migrate a handful of users to Office 365 to test it out before moving everyone else.

I have purchased the required licenses and verified the domain. I have also created the required users on Office 365 (with the real domain)

Is there a way that I could forward emails of only these users to the Office 365 mail server so that they can use Office 365 instead of the on premises exchange?

Appreciate any responses. thanks!

Thilina R

Configuring Outlook during a staged migration

$

Wondering what is the best practice for configuring Outlook during a Staged Exchange migration. If I start a migration for a user mailbox, then go to create a new Outlook profile for that user, the autodiscover service points them to their on-premise mailbox. The problem with that is they're no longer receiving new messages to their on-premises mailbox (they're being forwarded to cloud mailbox via the targetAddress property added to their AD account).

I've read posts like this that suggest manually configuring Outlook and pointing it to a specific Exchange Online server. The problem with that is that server may change in the future, at which point we'd have to reconfigure Outlook.

I've read this post that suggests using scripts to delete the on-premise mailbox and convert the account to a MEU. The problem with that is you have to wait until the mailbox has been migrated (since it deletes the on-premise mailbox).

My goal is to allow users to continue using Outlook while their email is being migrated (i.e. an online migration). But there doesn't seem to be a good way to do this with a staged migration. Any suggestions?

Migrate trail Plan 1 to Exchange online

Hi

I have two days left on my Exchange online Plan 1 trail period and now need to make a purchase decision.

I do not require Lync or SharePoint so I would like to only pay for exchange online.

How do I migrate/convert Plan 1 trail to exchange online? I only have 9 users plus one shared mailbox.

Thanks in advance.

Autodiscover not working in staged migration

My understanding is that when you kick off a staged migration, the targetAddress attribute is added to the user account being migrated. Then, when you connect to Outlook and create a new profile, the autodiscover service is supposed to see that attribute then point you to your cloud mailbox. This is not happening with us, however. The targetAddress attribute is being added to my accounts, but when I connect with Outlook, it still connects me to my on-premise mailbox. Am I missing something?

Exchange Online Archiving Immutability

Environment:

  • On-premesis Exchange 2010 SP2 with subscriptions to Exchange Online Archiving
  • Default Policy Tags for each mailbox that will move messages to the online archive once they reach 60 days of age.
  • Litigation Hold enabled for all users to preserve deleted items for eDiscovery.

We currently journal everything that is sent and received for 16 years using Exchange and 3rd party archiving software, mandated by our Legal department.  We are trying to make EOA fit this mold by using MRM but we have some concerns regarding immutability:

  1. Recoverable Items Quota - To obtain immutability, we have to be able to retain unlimited messages in the Recoverable Items folder.  What happens when users' mailboxes exceed the quota that has already been raised?  Is there a maximum size for the quota?
  2. Litigation Hold vs. Single Item Recovery - Is it necessary to implement both for what we need to accomplish or will Litigation Hold accomplish this by itself?  Are there separate settings for on-premises mailboxes and cloud archives?
  3. Terminated Users - Must we keep terminated user accounts and pay licensing for them in order for their data to remain immutable and searchable?
  4. Retention Period - Is the default retention for the cloud archive unlimited?  If not, can Support make that happen?  With so much of their competition offering unlimited retention, I certainly hope so.
  5. Best Practices - I haven't found any good step-by-step documentation for exactly how to setup Exchange Online Archiving for what we're trying to do.  Has anyone else?  I know we can't be the only ones.

Sorry for the lengthy post.  Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chad

New-MoveRequest from Cloud to On-Premises throw exception

I had a perfectly setup Hybrid Rich Coexistence scenario with Exchange Server 2010 SP2 RU3 and Office 365 E3.

In our setup, usually when an employee leaves the company, we move his mailbox to on-premises and from there we perform a MailboxExport. Everything was working smoothly, but now I'm getting the following when I run the cmdlet:

New-MoveRequest -Identity employee@company.com -OutBound -RemoteTargetDatabase "Employees" -RemoteHostName 'mrsproxy.company.com' -RemoteCredential $cred -TargetDeliveryDomain 'company.com'
Cannot find a recipient that has mailbox GUID '1b14220d-8f45-4d77-a93c-08cf7e167d75'.

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : D6318198,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.RecipientTasks.NewMoveRequest

No change in the configuration that was previously working. Taking a look to the IIS log I can see:

I tried the solution at http://community.office365.com/en-us/wikis/exchange/677.aspx, but it's not exactly the same problem (you can see 200 HTTP code), and even after trying, the problem persist.

I'm getting out of clues of what could be happening. Moving mailboxes back to on-premises is critical to our business so we need this fixed.

Migration from multiple exchange server single domain

Preparing for a migration to Office 365 from a single domain system with multiple exchange servers in different parts of the state. Each site has its own internet connection but is also connected to the main site via a VPN.

I have setup and tested dirsync and successfully migrated a test mailbox from the main site.

How do I migrate mailboxes from the second server?

Do I need to setup another RPC connection to the second site or do I need to move the mailboxes back to the main site before migrating?

Hybrid Migration - decommission

Hi,

We are looking at performing a Hybrid migration with all the bells and whistles i.e ADFS/Dirsync etc.

We are currently on Exchange 2010 coexisting with 2007 due to a previous techie. so the only staged migration option is a rich coexistence, once we have completed this we would like to decommission the existing 2010 and exchange 2007 environment.

I can't see much documentation in the way of the decommission process for exchange in a hybrid setup, i imagine there would be various complication any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Shaun

Hybrid Configuration Wizard - SMTP domains

Hi,

We ~100 SMTP domains, but only certificate and autodiscover for the primary domain.

I can run the Hybrid Configuration Wizard adding only the primary domain with no problem, but if I try adding other domains, I get an error because our certificate does not match the domain names.

Question: do I have to add all domains via the Hybrid Configuration Wizard or is it enough with the primary? As far as I can tell, all settings (connectors etc.) are in place after adding the primary domain.

What exactly happens when adding another domain via the wizard?

Thanks in advance!

SBS 2011 + exchange online archive

We have a customer with an SBS 2011 standard deployment at their office, working fine for their email needs so there is not a big push to move to office365.  They want to have email archive capability.  One thought was to get the $3/mo exchange online archive office365 subscription.

Will that work with SBS 2011?  Can we in this environment get the hybrid exchange deployment working?  Dirsync is easy, there are other servers we can run that on.

Decommissioning on premise servers

$

I know this question has been asked and I've searched the forum on this topic but have come up with conflicting answers so I'll ask it again.

I've done a staged migration using a hybrid server and have finished all the moves and am now wanting to decommission the on premise servers.

My environment:

On premise servers:  Exch 2003 -> 1 mailbox server, 1 frontend.  1 hybrid server -> Exch 2010

- Dirsync is in place and working

- SSO is in place and working

- AD is 2003 native mode (probably not relevant)

My goal is to remove my entire on premise Exchange infrastructure (obviously Dirsync and SSO will stay in place).  Is it a simple matter of following the instructions on uninstalling Exchange?  If so:

- what order should they be removed in?

- for the hybrid, is there anything special you need to do other than uninstalling?  Remove connectors first?  Break the federation?  Is there a guide on how to do this properly?

- after they are all removed, is it possible to install the EMC only on a server or workstation so I can see/manage the online side?  If so, how?  I know you can do most of the admin through the O365 admin portal but I think it leaves a bit to be desired.

- also, can the Exchange powershell component be installed on a server so you can do remote management of the online environment as needed?

- any other tips, tricks, etc. that might be good to know?

Exchange 2003 and AD 2003 go to Office 365

My customer have used Exchange 2003 and Windows Server 2003. They want to go Office 365 and move email, calendar and contact from Exchange 2003 to Exchange Online. How do they do? Should they upgrade AD first, or not? Please help to step by step.

Exchange 2003, AD integration and Outlook for Mac 2011 help

$

One of our directors has bought himself a Macbook Pro with Microsoft Office for Mac 2011. Of course he has asked us, the IT guys, to make it work on the corporate network (Windows 2003 AD). This is fine, however he wants to use Outlook 2011 with our Exchange 2003 server - which has many of you will know is unsupported - well doesn't work full stop!

He is insistent on using Outlook 2011 (not OWA) so I need to find a way around this somehow. Of course, upgrading to Exchange 2010 might be one answer but that isn't going to happen overnight and will be expensive. In the short to medium term, we thought about using Office 365 and somehow migrating his Exchange account to this so he can get full Exchange functionality. However, we need to link this into our AD network so he can gain access to the GAL, etc.

Does anyone know if this can be done or a way of getting this to work?

Thanks in anticipation.

Copy Calender from Outlook 2007 to Office 365

I've look through many threads on this but can't seem to get the right answer.  My local Outlook is already connect to 365, I've figured out how to import my contacts, how to move existing folders over, etc, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to copy the Calender over to 365.  Please, please help me with this and do your best to give an answer in lay man's terms.

Thanks so much!

Can't Create new mailbox with vanity domain

$

We recently wrapped up a staged migration from our local Exchange server to Office 365. I used the Exchange migration tool to migrate all of the mailboxes to the cloud. That worked fine. We've setup SSO and it's been working great. We finally moved our MX records to point directly to the cloud, and no longer to our local server (while migrating, the mail server pointed locally, and the exchange migration pointed the moved users to their cloud mailbox).

Now I have an issue with new users. I created a new user locally for SSO purposes. The user created properly, and synced properly. The issue is their mailbox. It was created with the primary address being mydomain.microsoftonline.com. I want it to be mydomain.com. If I try and create a mailbox directly in Exchange Online, it doesn't give me mydomain.com as an option. How can I be able to create new mailboxes in the cloud using our vanity domain?

My second issue is with mailing lists. We had a mailing list locally created called staff, that had all of our existing users. I can't seem to update it now in Exchange online, and I need to be able to, because maiboxes for new contacts are not being created locally but only online. Do I need to re-create the mailing list in the cloud, in order to be able to manage it there?

How can I "complete" the Exchange migration to the cloud while using SSO? We don't want to remove Exchange locally, so we still can use the exchange shell to manage things when we need to. But we do want to manage ALL of our mailboxes in the cloud now, and they need to be able to be tied to our SSO users. Can someone please assist?

Cutover Exchange Migration Errors from third party Exchange server

I am attempting to migrate my mailboxes from a third party hosted Exchange service (using Exchange 2003) to Exchange Online. I am able to connect to the existing server OK when using the Remote Connectivity Analyzer. When I set up and run an e-mail migration batch, the new mailboxes are created successfully. However, no actual data is transferred from the mail accounts. This is the error I receive:

I am not sure how to resolve this. I am using the adminstrator email account for the existing hosted Exchange 2003 service, but I do not have the ability to change permissions beyond making the account an administrator.

I read other articles about using an IMAP approach, but I have no idea of how to do that when the existing account is using Exchange 2003. There is no imap server set up.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi All,

I have Exchange hybrid coexistence environment.

And my question is, how to assign the attributes for each of the user by using FOPE?, or by Exchange Admin Outlook (Manage my Organization >> Rules)?

Actually i did tried both, only in FOPE disclaimer appeared as wanted, but not for attributes, for example %%DisplayName%% or %%FirstName%%, it doesn't translate the users themself.

Any help much appreciate it.

Thanks.
